Apollo delivers energy efficiency to Cwmbran Tower

The Apollo team in Wales is working to design energy efficiency measures to the landmark Cwmbran Tower, in Cwmbran, which will help residents reduce both their environmental impact, and their energy bills.

At the 22-storey tower, Apollo will work with Bron Afon Community Housing and architects, the Pentan Partnership, to design a replacement for the building’s concrete exterior with a thermal covering and install new windows and doorways, vastly improving the appearance and the insulation value of the 81 flats in the block.

Standing 210 feet high, The Tower was the tallest building in Wales at the time of its construction in 1967. Designed by architect Gordon Redfern, it was built to mask two existing chimney stacks and to act as a focal point for the town.

Residents in The Tower have already been involved in decisions regarding the finished look of the building and future consultations will be carried out as the project progresses.

Alongside the work on The Tower, Apollo will also carry out external rendering work to deliver improved insulation to a further 148 properties in Torfaen for Bron Afon.

Apollo’s Regional Manager, Ian Flatt, said: ‘We are really looking forward to working with Bron Afon Community Housing on this exciting and interesting project. Not only will we be improving the appearance of this well-known, landmark building, but we will also be providing residents with measures to improve the energy efficiency of their homes. The work we are carrying out will deliver very real benefits for the environment, as well as cost-savings for the tenants and leaseholders.’

Dave Sharman, Director of Property for Bron Afon, added: ‘One of Bron Afon’s aims is to ensure we provide high quality, energy efficient, affordable homes, high quality communal areas and excellent services to tenants and leaseholders in Torfaen. The work to The Tower is designed to do exactly this, and we are delighted to be working with Apollo on this project.’
