A quick look at the new WHQ

The Winter issue of WHQ will be with readers and online soon. Here’s a sneak preview.

Our cover feature looks at implementation of two of the major provisions of the first Welsh Housing Act. Two months after the deadline for registration of private landlords, we have contrasting views from landlords, tenants and Rent Smart Wales on how the new system is working while Steffan Evans looks ahead to how enforcement might work.

And almost two years after the provisions on homelessness prevention came into force, Jennie Bibbings reports on the first research to ask homeless people themselves how the system is working and we also look at growing interest from the rest of the UK in what’s been called the Welsh way.

Turning further North, Ken Gibb assesses progress on housing in Scotland as Holyrood gets used to new powers and responsibilities following the independence referendum and the Smith Commission.

But we also look beyond the UK at Housing First, an approach to homelessness that originated in the USA but has spread to many other European countries. Tamsin Stirling reports on how it’s working in Lille in France and we also look at successes in Finland.

Closer to home, Paul Diggory reports on preparations in Anglesey for the housing impacts of Energy Island, the huge series of investments in energy-related projects, and on work that’s already underway in Holyhead.

Elsewhere we report on a new approach to new homes in Monmouthshire and the impact of stock transfer in Gwynedd while Sharon Lee of Housing Justice Cymru looks at what churches in Wales can do about housing and homelessness.

We also follow up the focus on housing and health in the Autumn issue with more from Carly Dix on the next steps in joint working and from Ken Perry on the agenda for the 2025 movement in North Wales.

Last but not least, WHQ covers awards season in Wales, with a detailed look at all the winners in the 2016 Welsh Housing Awards plus a feature on the organisations and people honoured in the 2016 Promoting Independence Awards.

With many thanks to Newport City Homes for its kind sponsorship, we hope all that plus WHQ’s regular features make this an issue worth waiting for.

If you already subscribe, look out for the new WHQ in print and online later this week. If you don’t but that sneak preview interests you, find out more details about subscribing here.
