Ending the housing emergency

Rob Simkins looks ahead to Shelter Cymru’s People and Homes Conference 2021.

We are delighted to announce our flagship annual conference, People and Homes 2021, where we’re bringing you all the big names, big issues and best practice. On Wednesday July 7 and Thursday July 8, from the comfort of your own home or office, you can get the latest updates on the housing emergency in Wales and how we can work to end the crisis once and for all.

We are thrilled to confirm that renowned Guardian columnist, author and activist George Monbiot will be co-presenting a session on his Land for the Many report. Alongside co-author Beth Stratford – a fellow at the New Economics Foundation and co-founder of the London Renters’ Union – the conference will hear first-hand about our ‘most fundamental asset’ and how land affordability is driving the housing crisis.

Now chances are, if you’re reading this blog then you probably don’t need us to tell you that land value plays a significant role in perpetuating the housing emergency we all currently face in Wales. Land for the Many sets out a series of recommendations which, while originally intended for the 2019 UK Labour Party manifesto, do set out fresh thinking and tangible steps to curb the housing emergency.

From rent controls to ending no-fault evictions; from replacing council tax to renewing the drive to build social housing, many of the recommendations have been reflected to some degree across the political spectrum during May’s Senedd elections, illustrating their importance and relevance to people and homes, here in Wales.

In addition to hearing directly from George Monbiot, the packed agenda also includes:

  • A panel debate between Members of the Senedd about what bold action they believe needs to be taken to end the housing emergency in Wales
  • Keynote address from Chloe Timperley, author of Generation Rent, on the roots of the housing crisis and its impact, followed by a discussion and Q&A
  • The new Minister for Housing, on their priorities and plans for 6th Senedd
  • Virtual networking sessions, where attendees can meet their peers and visit exhibitor stands all while never leaving their desk – and much more.

Get your tickets today, we look forward to seeing you at the conference.
