What is your name?
Where do you work and what do you do?
I work at Community Housing Cymru (CHC) the membership body for Housing Associations in Wales. I am the new Policy and External Affairs Manager.
Why did you choose a career in housing?
I previously worked in the third sector campaigning against fuel poverty, where I witnessed the appalling effects of living in a cold, unsafe home. A warm, safe, and permanent home is the foundation of a healthy quality of life, but unfortunately there aren’t enough of these, so I wanted to be involved in the sector building affordable, good quality housing. Furthermore, caring for the environment is something that I’m really passionate about, and there is a real opportunity for housing associations in Wales to lead the way on decarbonising homes and I wanted to be involved in this.
What is the most important thing you have you learned since starting your career in housing?
The housing sector is working holistically to support householders’ health, social, and financial needs. With cash-strapped local authorities and overstretched NHS services, we are increasingly seeing housing officers delivering support to tenants with complex and high needs, who are unable to get the support elsewhere.
What advice would you give someone applying for a job in housing?
Don’t worry if you don’t know everything about housing yet – you’re not supposed to! Employers are looking for you skills and qualities, so demonstrate how you can apply these in the job you are applying for. Be honest and show your passion.
Where would you be working, if not in housing?
I’m into politics, the environment, and animal welfare – so maybe one of these!
What motivates you?
Trying to leave the world a better place.
What do you do to relax?
Cycle, mountain bike, running, reading, gardening, wine!
Proudest moment?
I organised the donation of 40 beds from a hotel to an upcycle charity in Cardiff who tackle furniture poverty. Wales Online featured the story online which gave the charity some recognition and publicity. The charity gives customers affordable furniture and white goods without having to rely on uncontrollable credit agreements, and their work reduces waste and impact on the planet, so it was great to be able to promote their work.
The most embarrassing moment?
So many! The time I fell over as a waitress in front of loads of customers is definitely one! The time my cat stole my neighbours’ gammon…
What was the last film you watched and how did you rate it?
The latest Mad Max film was on the TV the other night, and although I’m not that into action films I really enjoyed it. It was dark, nihilistic, thrilling, and actually quite bonkers (also Tom Hardy is in it…)
