Credit where credit’s due
CHC is working with credit unions in Wales to look at how housing associations and credit unions can work more closely. We are in the process of setting up a pan-Wales meeting between members and credit unions to look at the huge amount of good practice which is already out there and how we can build upon the good practice guide CHC produced in 2010. The guide can be found on the publications page of our website www.chcymru.org.uk.
Welsh Government recently expressed a desire to see credit unions and advice agencies working more closely. CHC is working with other advice providers in Wales to look at developing a better understanding between advice providers and credit unions. A piece of research which will look at existing good practice in the housing sector and also at the Moneyline Cymru model is due to be commissioned by this group. The Your Benefits are Changing campaign is also in discussions with a credit union to pilot money advice in a credit union outlet.
CHC’s Housing-Led Regeneration Network recently looked at the HACT micro-enterprise investment pilot programme (in partnership with the Community Development Finance Association) to explore the creation of loans for residents who may be looking to start up their own business. The Robert Owen CDFI will be the partner here in Wales. HACT is looking for investments in tranches of £50,000 and will provide match funding and mentoring. This programme is starting in in the North of England and currently has eight housing associations signed up.
