Leaders of the UK social housing sector federations have issued an appeal to members to support Homeless International – a UK based charity set up by the sector to support housing and settlement improvements for slum dwellers throughout the developing world.
David Orr of the National Housing Federation, Mary Taylor of Scottish Federation of Housing Associations and Nick Bennett of Community Housing Cymru have issued a joint statement asking their members to “Round up membership fees and help build a better future for generations to come.”
Homeless International completed over 3,400 homes for poor families in 2012 and gained secure tenure of land for 40,000 people as part of its efforts to develop sustainable settlement programmes which will improve the health and well-being of communities throughout Africa and Asia this year.
The social housing sector has supported Homeless International for over twenty years and recently donated nearly £10,630 through the annual Hour’s Pay appeal. This money will be used to support vital projects such as those currently underway in Tanzania where £1,500 would pay for a two roomed starter home or in Malawi where £2,500 would provide for a communal water kiosk serving 100 slum families.
