A Zest for life

Melin Homes win top CIPD People Management award

Melin Homes, a Housing Association
managing over 3,600 homes and
based in Pontypool, South Wales are
celebrating after winning a prestigious
national award. Melin’s “Zest” Project
was launched in September 2011 and
aims to engage team members in a
number of activities to improve their
health and well-being at work.

“The results have
been truly amazing
and prove once and
for all that “Happy
people really does =
happy customers”.

Melin is a top performing organisation
with a reputation for customer service
excellence, providing a wide range
of community and housing related
services for local people. Melin is
much more than a traditional landlord
and is involved in life changing
initiatives including employment,
health, energy and care.

“Organisations of
a much larger size
could learn a lot
from Melin”

Sharon Crockett Assistant Director
of Business Consultancy and Zest
team member said “It was fantastic to
win the award but more importantly it
is great to see the amazing positive
benefits that our well-being strategy
has had on our people and our
customers.”
The judges commented
on the remarkable range of well-being
initiatives including financial advice,
health education, alternative therapies,
stress workshops and other support
for both customers and employees.

The project has not just been a quick
fix but an on-going strategic drive to
ensure that Melin is a great place to
work and its culture reflects people
with a positive attitude to life and work.
This is reflected in their employee
morale survey showing a consistent
increase over the last few years. Two
years ago, prior to the Zest initiative,
58% of employees felt encouraged
to be active and maintain a healthy
lifestyle. This has now increased to an
incredible 98% this year.

Other survey results show that:

  • 97% of employees feel that
    Melin cares about their general
    well being
  • 98.5% of employees love
    working for Melin

Organisational benefits have
been huge, with sickness
absence cut to 0.9%, a reduction
in staff turnover to 4.3% and
increased employee satisfaction and
commitment, with a record 91.1%
of employees completing the staff
survey this year.

Yasmin Hier, a member of the Zest
group said “Zest encourages people
to really think about their lifestyles
and well-being in general, it is great
to have been recognised for our
work.”

“An ‘outstanding
entry’ Melin clearly
demonstrated how
well-being has been
embedded within the
organisations culture”

CIPD judging panel

People are incredibly important at
Melin. A vibrant environment and can
do culture all contribute to ensuring
that Melin people are committed to
making a positive difference to their
customers lives and the communities
they live in. As their strap line says
“Together we can” achieve anything…
And they do!

Melin’s five steps to a healthy
and engaged workforce

1. Agree, brand and
communicate clearly
the aims of your well-being
project;

2. Set up a group of
committed volunteers to
drive the project, but involve
everyone;

3. Be brave and innovative, try
different initiatives e.g. Rock
climbing, Khuya Lympia
massage and hypnotism;

4. Establish a dedicated
budget;

5. Demonstrate and measure
outcomes that make a
positive difference to
people’s lives.
