Community celebration event 2011

On January 26th, Newport Housing Trust held their ‘Community Celebration event’ at the Christchurch Centre, Newport. This fun and informative event gives residents the opportunity to meet staff as well as gaining useful information and advice from a number of organisations in the local area that provide services for the over 60s.

Organisations that attended included, Gwent Police, Age Concern, British Red Cross, Ceramics, Expert Patients Programme, WRVS, E-Inclusion, Haven mobility, Vision 21 -gardening services, Community Centres within our estates, South Wales Fire Service, Newport Male Voice Choir, Newport Council Health & Leisure, The Lighthouse Project, British Red Cross Therapeutic Care and Rubicon Dance.

Guests were treated to a performance from The Alcan Singers, who sung a number of well known songs including Moon River and Any Dream Will Do which succeeded in livening people up straight after lunch.

This year saw the return of ‘The Recognition Awards’ which was launched at the event last year. Award Categories include four resident awards: The Ron Jones Award; Unsung Hero; Community Involvement Award and Commitment & Support Award.

Three staff awards were also presented to Rhian John for the Unsung Hero award and Julie Simmonds and Carolyn Pearse won the Role Model award.
